Needle Numbering System in Sewing Machine

 Numbering System

When it comes to stitching, the process of selection of needle size is very important. Required needle number varies as per fabric nature. As per the size of the needle point, shank diameter their is a labelling system for the needle. Mainly their are two systems :

1. American

2. European

The method of these systems to assigning the needle number is different from each other.

American system refer needle number from 8 to 19 where 8 becomes a fine needle and 19 becomes a thick needle.

European system refer needle number from 60 to 120 where 60 becomes a fine needle and 120 becomes a thick needle.

Need for selecting a proper needle size –

1. For a light weight fabric like saree, silk, window curtains, etc. a fine needle such as 8 or 60 (8/60) can be use. Use of needle of size 19/120 will leave hole into the fabric.

2. For the medium weight fabric such as satin, light woollen 12/80 sized needle is preferred for the better sewing.

3. In case of heavy weight material like leather, upholstery fabric we have to select needle of size 19/120. So that it can easily penetrate through the fabric. Whereas with 8/60 the needle will either will break or bend.

Note – The order (8/60 or 60/8) in numbering systems does not affect the needle size.

In selection of sewing needle, you can determine the correct needle size by knowing Needle to Thread Relation.
