DETERMINATION OF FABRIC CREASE RECOVERY ANGLE

DETERMINATION OF FABRIC CREASE RECOVERY ANGLE

Aim: To determine crease recovery angle of given fabric sample.

Scope: This test method is used to determine the wrinkle recovery of woven fabrics

Requirement: Crease Recovery Tester, Scissor, template (2” x 1”)

Principle:

A test specimen is folded and compressed under controlled conditions of time and force to create a folded wrinkle. The test specimen is then suspended in a test instrument for a controlled recovery period, after which the recovery angle is recorded.

Terminology:

1. Crease recovery: The property of a fabric which enables it to recover from Folding deformations.

2. Crease resistance: The property of a fabric to resist crease formation.

Procedure:

1. The specimens shall be conditioned to moisture equilibrium in the standard atmosphere of 65 ± 2 percent relative humidity and 27 ± 2 °C temp.

2. Mark and cut the ten warp way and ten weft way samples as per the given Template.

3. Fold a specimen end-to-end and hold it in this position with tweezers. Gripping no more than 5 mm from the ends. In instances where the surfaces of the specimens show a tendency to stick together, place a piece of paper or aluminium foil, 18 x 14 mm, between the ends of the specimen.

4. Place the folded specimen between the two leaves of the loading device And immediately apply the weight of 1kg and wait for 5min.

5. Allow the fabric to relax for 5min.

6. Using tweezers transfer the folded specimen to the instruments circular Scale specimen holder.

7. While the specimen is in the holder, adjust the instrument to keep the free hanging end of the specimen in alignment with the vertical mark for 1 min to avoid the effect of gravity.

8. Read and record the recovery angle from the circular scale.

9. Half the number of test specimen (Both in case of warp and weft) shall be Folded face to face and another half back to back.

Conclusion:

Crease recovery is an important property of fabric for different end uses. This behavior can be imparted fabric by different finishes. By this practical we learn how to determine crease recovery of fabric by Shirley recovery tester. This practical will help us in our study life as well as job life.
