Defects in Knitted Fabric

As earlier we have seen the various types of fabric defects in woven fabric, below given are some of the defects found in knitted fabric

1)      Holes/Crocs



2)      Dropped stitches/fall of fabric

    When a stitch is felling because of malfunctioning of the needle.


3)      Vertical lines

4)      Tuck/ double loops

5)      Barre/horizontal stripes

A noticeable stripes in the fabric because of uneven yarn and uneven tension width wise.


6)      Colour fly

7)      Needle trace

Wales are distorted because of a bend in the needle.

9) Slubs :- Unexpected sudden thickness in the yarn

10) Birds eye :- An un tensioned tucked stitches which appear vocationally in the knitted fabric.

11) Coarse yarn : Yarn having large diameter than the normal in the fabric.

12) Fine yarn :- A yarn is having smaller diameter than the normal in the fabric.

13) Missed draw:- In warp knitted fabric the coloured yarns are longly drawn through the guide bars which causes the different appearance of the fabric than the design pattern.

14) Missing yarns: A yarn is missing or broken if the machine keeps running continuously after yarn breakage.

15). Press off :- A condition in which a knitted fabric fails to knot and as a result either the fabric falls off the needle or design of the fabric is completely destroyed.

16). Run :- A vertical line caused by damaged needle.

17) Tucking effect :- One or more unwanted tuck stitches appear on the knitted fabric which occur due to malfunctioning of needle or Jack.

18) Stains – Stains are mainly due to improper house keeping, oil leakages in the machines, improper handling, uncleaned containers of materials and lack of awareness among the employees and the management.
